Subject: Great remaster of a great PLQ show
Subject: Great remaster of a great PLQ show
The setlist isn't all that much to write home about (compare to the one from the Charlotte 04/20/2001 show a few nights later) but this was one very special
...
band that could make any setlist amazing.
Very tight, purposeful playing from every guy on stage making for some incredibly creative improv. This version of Phil Lesh & Friends (which, like a lot of folks, I've always warmly called "Phil Lesh Quintet" like a jazz group from the 60s) is by far my favorite of his.
And hats off to Picklemic here as this version is the best of all the ones I've tasted on the archive here and is also pleasantly complete (whereas the old version I had from CD starts about 6 minutes into the show opening jam - and that's one hot jam).
Finally, this was my birthday show that I went to solo after friend had to drop out (no way was I gonna miss it). Met some really cool kids from one of the north Alabama cities/towns who didn't have any decent smoke but had some damn good liquid. I packed them bowls all night of some funk I'd brought and they made sure I was flying during this show. Good times!
We were up in the balcony and I was sorta fearing a heavy security presence for this "Grateful Dead-related concert" (it is Alabama after all) but I think I only saw an usher once during the show. When I did saw an older black security guard guarding the door at the top of the stairs in section across from us, I realized he was just earning his pay by sleeping in a chair - ;-).
Unforgettable night, thanks for helping me relive it!
